Breaking past the $5 million revenue mark in home services isn't just a financial milestone—it's a transformational point where your business can operate independently, provide significant cash flow, and become a valuable asset.
It's the sweet spot.
I started the Breaking $5M Workshop because I wished I had something like this when I was under five million dollars. It took us years to figure out the steps to scale, but you don't have to navigate this journey alone.
By surrounding yourself with the right people and gaining access to proven strategies, you can accelerate your growth and achieve your business goals.
Are you a home service business owner feeling trapped under the $5 million revenue mark? You're not alone.
Many owners experience what we jokingly call "Owner's Hell"—that challenging phase where you're juggling everything, from putting out fires to handling late-night service calls, and growth feels just out of reach.
But what if there was a way to break through this barrier and unlock new opportunities for your business?
In our most recent Breaking $5M Workshop, we gathered a group of dedicated owner-operators from plumbing, HVAC, electrical, and other home services--and from all over the country.
Over two huge days, we dove into the strategies and systems that can propel a company from under $5 million to that point of prosperity.
I want to introduce you to these owners via the size of their operations, their biggest pain points, and what they hoped to take away from the Workshop.
Let's do it.
What Home Service Owners Attend The Breaking $5M Workshop?
The most recent Breaking $5M Workshop featured a variety of owners of sizes and focus, all with different industry verticals. Here's the breakdown.
Industry of Choice/Percentage of Attendees
- HVAC (including HVAC/Plumbing): 50%
- Electrical Only: 14%
- Plumbing Service and Repair Only: 7%
- Water Treatment, Well Drilling: 7%
- Construction / Home Service: 7%
- HVACR Distribution: 7%
Business Size/Percentage of Attendees:
- Under $1.5 Million: 21%
- $1.5M–$3M: 36%
- $3M–$5M: 29%
- Over $5 Million: 14%
What's really interesting about the owners who attend is the questions they have walking into the workshop. Some of those questions include:
- How can I break $5 million as fast as possible?
- What are the qualities of a great Service Manager and how do you recruit one?
- What does our marketing strategy need to look like to grow from $2.5 million to $5 million and then to $10 million?
- What are the key systems and processes that need to be in place to scale my business?
- What is my next step to grow from where we are currently and determine the right path forward?
- How can I transition my company to not be fully dependent on the owner?
- Can you scale both commercial and residential businesses at the same time, or should the focus be on just one?
Those are big questions, and just a taste of some of the questions being asked as we walked into the first day of education.
But first, the tour:
A Walk Around Wilson
We kick off workshops with a tour of our warehouse and loading zone for a reason: It's the place where a lot of our company's leveling up has happened. It wasn't that long ago that we switched to a full VMI setup and began thinking differently about how our techs get ready for service.
Seeing the warehouse in action is an instant value for owners who come in. They immediately get info that they see with their own eyes about how things can be done differently--and efficiently.
Best of all: It's all obtainable.
I say this on the tour every time, but a VMI and packout kit system similar to what we do can be achieved in 90 days.
All it takes is knowing what to do. But that's only one pain point.
Here's what else the Workshop can do for owners looking to break revenue barriers.
The Pain Is The Point
Being an owner is hard--harder than a lot of people who have never done it will realize.
I'm on the other end of almost a decade of struggles, long nights, hard decisions, and big mistakes. I didn't have a blueprint walking into being the owner, and that meant a lot of trial and error.
The pain points will get you every time.
One of the most common issues for owners who come into the workshop is that they want to find a way to reduce the need for them to be the person to put out fires.
Emergency calls at night?
Being out in the field because you can't cover? Bad systems? No leads coming in? All of it falls to the owner when you're in that $1-3M range--Owner's Hell.
But it's also not as simple as "get big, then get hands off."
Until you get the systems and structures in place, the owner is that de-facto point person.
As one owner said at the start of the most recent workshop: "I do mostly all the sales. All of them, 90 percent. My techs help me out a little bit, but my goal is to have the company run without depending on me."
I feel that so hard. That was me at one point. And now I want to pass on what I've learned and get more owners to that point where this work gets really fun.
What's In A Workshop?
There's four main aspects of the Breaking $5M Workshop--These are the big value points that will help owners get to the next level.
Open-Book Sharing
- Providing transparent insights into our own business with real-world solutions.
This is my actual business; this isn't fake. Workshop co-host Jack Carr and I are both open the door on our day-to-day to show how things are done. There's a trust in that, but a major value. It's like seeing the warehouse; just seeing it in action in and of itself a big deal.
How To Build Systems Before Scaling Your Marketing
- Highlighting the importance of solidifying internal processes before ramping up lead generation.
More marketing doesn't solve a lot of problems. If you don't have your steps solidified, then nothing good is going to happen when the phone rings. We go over what it takes to build those systems and where to start, no matter your current size.
Networking Opportunities
- Facilitating connections so owners can "find their posse" and continue supporting each other beyond the workshop.
Past participants still email weekly, actively talking to each other, bouncing ideas off one another. One of the most important things you can foster as a business owner is a strong peer group. This is the chance to turbo-charge that process.
Actionable, Repeatable Steps
- Each session focuses on deep-diving into specific areas, ensuring no lingering questions remain. These are all takeaways you can replicate.
We encourage participants to ask questions, no matter how big or small they might be. If you're wondering it, everyone else is wondering it too. Ask those questions while at the Workshop. Don't leave any stone unturned.
