Running a business can be one of the most rewarding endeavors, but it also comes with a unique set of challenges and stresses. Do you let the pressure get to you? If so, I'm here to talk about what you can do to help manage and alleviate your business stress and become a better owner.

Understanding the Sources of Business Stress

One of the primary sources of stress for business owners is the financial strain. When starting a new business, most of the profits are reinvested to secure growth and stability. This often means taking a minimal personal salary (or none) which can lead to further pressure.

Unlike larger companies with established revenue streams, small business owners frequently find themselves juggling multiple financial responsibilities.

As I can attest, the owner often wears many hats. Whether it's acting as the technician, dispatcher, or finance person, the responsibilities are numerous and varied. This constant shifting of roles can be super stressful, as it requires a broad skill set and a lot of patience.

The fear of failure is a constant companion for almost every business owners. With personal and family investments on the line, the emotional burden can be significant. The potential for financial instability or even bankruptcy is always looming.

People are relying on you. That's always going to be hard.

Identifying Personal Stress Triggers

Procrastination is a common stress trigger. When important tasks are delayed, stress levels can increase due to the pressure of unmet deadlines and unfinished work.

Often, busy work is mistaken for productive work, leading to a sense of accomplishment that is ultimately just doing the work you should have done.

The culture of constant hustle can also be a significant source of stress. While a certain level of hustle is necessary for success, it is important to strike a balance. Overworking can lead to burnout, which is counterproductive in the long run.

Don't let the grindset grind you down.

How to Manage Your Business Stress in the Moment

One of my ways to manage stress is through breathing exercises. These techniques help bring focus to the present moment, reducing anxiety about future uncertainties.

By practicing regular breathing exercises, business owners can find relief from the mental chaos that often accompanies stress. You can find all sorts of tutorials on YouTube, or from services like HeadSpace.

Regular exercise is another fantastic tool in combating stress. Sometimes you just need an outlet and there's no better way to get it out than physical activity.

Taking a moment to decompress before engaging with family can make a big difference. Mindfulness and meditation practices can help in achieving clarity about your situation and figuring out what your next move might be.

Many business owners find relief in physical relaxation methods such as massages. While this may seem like a luxury, it can be an effective way to reduce tension and take some time for yourself.

Remember: You don't need to forget about the stress, but you do need to not let it rule you.

Breathe Deep

Managing stress as a business owner takes a certain kind of approach. If you can understand the sources of stress, identify your own triggers, and find a way to manage that pressure, then you'll be all the better off.

But at the end of the day, I think the main thing is just realizing that it's going to be okay. We've had some people on here who have gone through bankruptcy or are going through bankruptcy, and they said that they have been happier than they've ever been.

I'm not saying that it's a great thing to go through bankruptcy, but the realization that nothing is worth ruining your life, losing your life and or stressing to the point of sickness and health deterioration. All will be well.
